The 49erFX is a high-performance, two-person skiff designed for fast, dynamic, and tactical racing. It is the women’s Olympic skiff class, adapted from the men’s 49er with a smaller rig to accommodate lighter crews while maintaining the boat’s speed and responsiveness. The skipper steers the boat and makes decisions and the crew works the sails and speed of the boat.
Key Features of the 49erFX
Twin trapeze – Both sailors use harnesses to balance the boat, maximizing speed and stability.
Asymmetrical spinnaker – A large downwind sail that allows for fast, exciting runs.
Lightweight & agile – Requires exceptional coordination, fitness, and boat-handling skills.
Speeds exceeding 20 knots – Demands quick decision-making and precise execution.
Format of 49erFX Racing
1. Fleet Racing:
Events typically consist of 10-12 fleet races over several days.
Races last about 30 minutes each.
The low-point scoring system is used (1st place = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, etc.).
Crews can drop their worst result after a certain number of races.
2. Medal Race:
The top 10 boats after fleet racing qualify for the Medal Race.
This race is worth double points and cannot be discarded.
The overall winner is the team with the lowest total score after all races.
3. Olympic Regatta Format:
The Olympic 49erFX event follows the same format—fleet racing leading to a final Medal Race that determines the podium positions.
